We purchased a money blower machine for our sister station WKHQ and a Majestic Canopy for station WLXT. The products are in invaluable asset. When we participate in multi-station remotes, the money blower (KH Kash Kube as we call it) makes us the center of attention hands down. We've had people buy remote packages for the sole purpose of having our Kash Kube present.

We've had similar results with our canopy for WLXT. With this one piece of equipment, we are instantly able to look like a professional, major market operation when we go on remotes. These products are killer.

“People always ask…Where did you get that neat looking tent?” said Karen Baltz. Karen Baltz is the special events coordinator for North Jeffco Park & Recreation District in Arvada, Colorado. The district bought a yellow KD StarShade 400 four years ago with their name and logo silk screened onto the tent.

KD StarShade’s towering presence, yellow color and graphics are impossible to miss. “You can spot it from a distance, “said Karen. “We just tell everyone to look for the big yellow tent. They always find it!”

“The first event we used the tent for was the 4 th of July, a few years ago,” said Karen. “We used the KD StarShade 400 at the Sports Complex for our entertainment, a band called ‘The Country Fuzz’ (a local Police band). It was so easy to set up it took two guys only 15 minutes!”

“Every year we have an ‘Arvada Century Bike Ride,’ which is a 100 mile bike ride,” said Karen. “We put up the KD StarShade 400 in the park and use it for various functions throughout the day, ending with entertainment. Other uses for the tent include: Park Dedications, VIP seating, special events, volleyball tournaments, softball games, golf course events and many more. I’d say we’ve gotten our money’s worth!”

Martha Musgrove, owner of Equipment Rental & Sales in McAllen, Texas, has had 10’x10’ KD Originals in her inventory since 1985. “These tents are terrific for style and shelter in our hot, outdoor South Texas weather,” said Martha. “The KD Kanopys come with a heavy duty vinyl carry bag, roughly the size of a golf bag, which stores the tent compactly and allows you the convenience of transporting it in the back of your car. The KD Kanopy sets up in minutes and has no guy ropes or loose parts to worry about. They have been used for weddings, mobile kitchens, children’s birthday parties, concession stands, special events and track meets. KD’s are an excellent choice when a small tent is needed. Their uses are endless!

In the spring of 1992, Martha added a white KD StarShade 800 to her inventory. Attractive “giveaway” postcards were displayed on the store’s counter. An article and picture of the KD StarShade 800 ran in the newspaper. “The tent immediately became a big hit,” said Martha. “Its unique shape provides an attractive centerpiece for any activity.”

Recently, Martha set up the KD StarShade 800 for a wedding reception at a local country club. She said, “We placed small spot lights at each of the 6 points aiming them towards the top of the tent. At night, it gave the tent such a ‘glow’. The center pole had flowers and foliage spiraled up and around it. Skirted tables, which displayed an elegant buffet, ‘serpentine’ around the center pole. The KD StarShade 800 looked so spectacular we booked 6 future rentals from the one event! The best part is it is so easy to set up!”

Jim Lothridge is the owner of Fiesta Affairs in Rubidoux, California. He bought his first KD Original 10’x10’ back in 1985. Jim is still doing business with KD Kanopy today.

“KD Kanopies are great!” said Jim. “They are terrific for OTC Rentals (Over the Counter). KD Kanopies are ready to go in minutes. We don’t need to send a crew out to set them up. Customers love KDs because they set up so easily and fit into the back of their car. Caterers aren’t the only ones who rent our KDs, homeowners use them too.”

Jim attended the CRA show (California Rental Show) in 1989 and visited the KD Kanopy booth. He met our C.O.O., John Matthews, and saw our new KD Imperial 260 displayed there. Jim was so impressed with our new KD Imperial and KD Original that he made a deal with John right then and there to purchase the display models! Jim walked away with the two KDs over his shoulder and ordered another KD Original and KD Imperial to be shipped to his store.

“The KD Kanopies go out often and give back a good return on our investment,” said Jim. “We even had a lady rent our KD 10’x10’ to use as a ‘portable tattoo parlor’ at various events she did. Another customer loved our KD so much, he stole it!”

This year Jim added to his collection of KD Kanopies. He now has 2 of our KD Majestic 100’s. “This is the easiest one yet!” said Jim. “Jeanne, my wife, went out to show a caterer how to set up the new Majestic 100. She was so surprised and pleased with how light and easy it was to set up. She loves it!”

Jim adds, “KD Kanopy is an excellent company to do business with. I had a few problems with my DK Imperial 260 and called them up for help. KD responded to my plea immediately. The company’s desire to service and correct the problem couldn’t have been better. KD Kanopy stands behind their products all the way. Their customer service people are always pleasant and eager to serve. Thanks!”

Craig Agan, Marketing Director for the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum visited our booth at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show (PRI) in Cincinnati, Ohio, last month. He came over to tell us how he loved his KD Majestic 100.

The museum is located in Knoxville, Iowa and is the only museum in the country devoted to the preservation of sprint cars and their predecessors, big cars. Part of Craig’s job is to travel to trade shows and national sprint car racing events around the country promoting the museum, their membership program and selling souvenir items.

Last summer, Lee Barfield, a member of the Board, noticed that Craig had his display set up in the hot Midwest sun. They discussed how nice it would be to have a sunshade for protection. This would also benefit the fans because it would make them feel more comfortable and hopefully make them spend more time at the souvenir table.

Craig contacted KD Kanopy in early September and it was suggested that he purchase the new lightweight KD Majestic with graphics. Mr. Barfield was given the details. He thought everything sounded wonderful and offered to purchase the canopy for the 501 © (3) non-profit organization! The canopy was delivered within two weeks, just in time for Craig and his wife, Pat, to take it on its first road trop to Pennsylvania.

Craig says, “I love the KD Kanopy. It has shielded us from sun and rain in the few short months that we’ve had it. With the custom printed graphics on the skirt we can use it as a display as well as a shelter. It has been used at indoor trade shows and at sprint car racing events. We had fans come down out of the grandstand to our display area when we were set up in the infield at Williams Grove Speedway. They saw our name on the skirt of the KD Kanopy and came to where we were. It’s a real attention getter.”

KD Kanopy has a satisfied and loyal customer right in our own back yard! All Seasons Rent All of Aurora, Colorado with Larry Sare as the owner and Fred Arnold, as manager. They have had KD Kanopies for the last 8 years, starting out with 4 KD Originals. All seasons Rent All now includes KD Majestics and a KD StarShade 400.

KD’s were first rented out to people who used them at fairs, picnics, corporate events, weddings, etc. “we had no problem renting them out,” said Fred. “KD’s are so easy to put up; we didn’t need to send out a crew. When the new KD Majestics came out, we decided it was time to get some ‘nicer looking’ canopies to rent out for weddings. The KD Majestics looked better and went up so much smoother. We were even able to charge more for them!”

“A few years ago we attended the ARA (American Rental Association) Trade Show,” said Fred. “Across the floor, we saw this uniquely shaped tent sticking out over the other tents. Our curiosity made us go check it out. The design was so different and it didn’t require any ropes to anchor it down! Better yet, we found out that it was a KD Kanopy. We were happy about that, because we had been a customer of KD Kanopy and knew they were a reputable company. The tent was called the KD StarShade 800. We decided to buy the smaller KD StarShade 400.”

“Last year when we set up the KD StarShade 400 at a Scottish Festival, it created so much attention,” said Fred. “There were so many people coming over to see the tent, they had to put stanchions around it. The following Monday when I was taking it down, the man who rented the KD StarShade 400, was already at the store reserving it for this year’s Scottish Festival!”

We have another winner for our “tentimonial”! Doug Benson of Advanced Rentals in Poulsbo, Washington shared with us his innovative and creative idea on how to generate more rentals for his StarShade.

Doug purchased a StarShade 800 from KD Kanopy in February 1991. Doug was convinced that this type of product needed to be seen in order to attract attention and requests for use. He cleverly came up with the idea of organizing a “Friday Afternoon Party” close to downtown. So Doug called up a few caterers, told them what he planned to do and asked if they would like to participate. Do you know what Doug did?

Doug set up his KD StarShade 800 at a park near downtown. The catering companies that participated set up tables under the StarShade and gave away samples of food with their business cards. Doug gave away balloons along with information on how to rent the spectacular looking StarShade. From that afternoon, he generated four rentals immediately!

Two weeks later, a Country Club called Doug and told him they needed a 20’x30’ (600 sq. ft.) tent by 11:00 A.M. that morning. It was already 9:30 A.M. and at least a 40 minute ride to the Club! Doug said he would do it. The Club manager was shocked because everyone else had said, “no way”! Doug got the job and had the tents up 10 minutes before 11:00 A.M.! This quick thinking and desire to help out the club resulted in three more tent rentals needed for weddings being held there in the near future.

Great marketing Doug! If Doug could be this imaginative, I’m sure there are more of you creative people out there who would love to share with us your ideas. Right?

We had the pleasure of seeing Kevin Wiemann again this year, at the Grand Rental Station Show in Orlando, Florida. Kevin is the general manager of Grand Rental Station in Houma, Louisiana. Kevin bought a StarShade 400 and a StarShade 800 from us last year at a show. We asked him how he liked having the StarShades for rentals. He was so thrilled and he proceeded to tell us why.

“I set up the StarShade outside my store and that started the phone calls. I don’t advertise. I took advantage of the graphics KD Kanopy offers, to put my logo on the tents in various places. When they’re seen at the events, people know where they can rent one.”

“The StarShade is easy to set up by two people within 15-20 minutes. I give the customer the option to set the tent up by themselves or they can pay to have my men set it up. The StarShade comes in two carry bags. I give out an instruction sheet and if requested – the video.”

“The StarShades are used for everything possible: socials, school fairs, barbecues, reunions, etc. They’re real easy to clean too. I use X-14 Mildew Cleaner, pressure-wash it, then set it up to let it dry. It comes out great!”

“I rent them out 3-4 times a month. (More in the warmer months.) I even rented a StarShade this year on Martin Luther King’s birthday!”

Jim Morgan, District Manager for Godfather’s Pizza, Spirit Lake, Iowa visited our booth at the NRA show. Seeing the 3 different models we had on display, Jim proceeded to tell us about his “upgrade” to the KD Majestic 100.

Godfather’s Pizza does catering for numerous occasions and events. When they first started, they built a custom mobile kitchen to drive around. That was fine until it was too big to fit into a lot of spaces provided.

The next thing that was tried, was building a concession. One that could be put together and torn down. “That concession took so long to put up and take down and weighed a ton too!” said Jim. “It took a few men just to carry it and put it together. The thing eventually fell apart.”

Two years ago, Godfather’s Pizza bought 2 KD Original Kanopys. “What a relief and pleasure it was to see how compact, easy and fast it was to put up and take down,” said Jim. “I just loved the size of the ‘package’ it came in and the ability to throw it into the back of a pick-up truck. And it took only 1 person to do that!”

The KD Originals were used to the “max”. Besides being used by itself, the KD was used with the mobile kitchen, to provide shade for the customers. Of course, heavy use of the KDs led to the need for a few new ones.

One of the bosses from the main office happened to see our new KD Majestic at a trade show and loved the new aluminum fame with tits strength being 40% stronger than the KD Original and 25% lighter. He ordered a few.

Jim never saw the new KD Majestic until he did another event. “I wound up putting the KD Majestic up by myself. It was better than the steel framed KD and went up smoothly. It was so ‘sweet’! I loved it!

Jim said, “Every time I put up my KD, people watch me with amazement and ask me where they can get one. The part I like the best is breaking down my entire booth in 15-20 minutes and see other people left behind still taking down their booths. I’m gone – out of there!”
