Screen Printing and Digital Printing – What’s the Difference?

Share:

Screen printing and digital printing are two different methods of creating prints. Screen printing transfers the material to be printed from a computer to a stencil (printing calls that stencil “screen”, hence the name) and the printing is performed introducing that stencil into the printing machine, while digital printing involves a direct connection between the computer and the printing press, with materials being sent between the two terminals without any intermediary.

Both techniques are widely used today, each of them offering distinct pros:

  • Where screen printing works best – screen printing ads a thicker layer of ink or paint, therefore it is usually the go-to technology for applications that require high vibrancy, such as when the print is applied on a dark surface. The technology is popular for specialty products and large orders that allow the printer to execute test prints to get the settings right;
  • Where digital printing works best – this technology performs the transfer of data without loss, therefore it requires no lengthy testing and setting-up, making the process suitable for executing not only larger, but smaller orders as well (digital printing can be used for printing any amount up from one piece). The process is the best choice for printing very detailed materials, such as sharp photo prints.
