Student orientation, also known as Fresher’s Week or O-week, is a program or a series of events organized during a period before the new academic year starts at a college or a university. The goal of the program is to let freshman students get to know each other as well as to engage youth in voluntary work and to familiarize them with the values and the traditions of the institution.
Student orientation weeks are usually held in large outdoor spaces, where the participants sleep bungalows, barracks or in tents. The period picked is one when the weather is usually stable and warm, a week in summer that offers plenty of opportunities to engage in outdoor activities. That aspect also calls for on-site protection measures – the site needs to be equipped with protection from the sun and the heat as well as from the other elements, such as from storms.
